What amp should I get for my car?

What kind of subwoofers should I get for my car if I already have a JX500/1 amp installed?

  • So for christmas I got a JL Audio JX500/1 amp and a pair of Thump! AT-8 subs and had them installed at a local shop. My head unit is an Alpine CDE-126BT and I have 4 Alpine SPS-517 speakers. The amp is already installed and everything is connected, but I just blew out the Thump! subs (don't buy, crappy quality). My question is what kind of subs should I get to connect to that amp, and do I need 2 of them or is just 1 OK? I drive a 1996 Ford Explorer if that is of any matter.

    Sounds like the problem you ran in to is the amp was too big for the Thump speakers, not that they were cheap quality. Just pick out any name brand and get you a pair. Kicker, Sony and Kenwood subs are good brands. The sub amp you have is only 1 channel and it supports 2 ohms so you can get 1 or 2 subs that are 4 ohms. Either way will work.

Yeah...that sucks! Thump never was a good brand even back in the days when Pyramid was ok. Not sure why they spent the money on JL then coupled it with something I wouldn't even put in my girl's ride. Anyways, what size subs do you want now, how much space are you willing to give up? With that amp you can drive just about any size, up to a pair as long as they are of the proper ohm load and power handling. With 340 rms watts into a 4 ohm load and 500 rms into a 2 ohm load you have a lot of options... A pair of sealed 10" would be nice and totally powerful in a Explorer.
