What output alternator do i need?

Do i need a new high-output alternator or better wires??

  • i have a 1000 watt fosgate amp with 2 10' fosgate subs. not 2 long ago my battery light started coming on and my bass started skipping at high volume (which i always have it on) it didnt use 2 skip but it started 2 so i bought a new optima yellow top battery. the 1st day it seemed like my system was louder/stronger so i was happy. then it started skipping at high volume again but not as bad as before. do i need new thicker wires? my amps ground wire is speaker wires because the kit didnt include ground wire. or do i need a high-putput alternator?? i dont want a capacitor since ive heard it just hurts the battery, but every1 tells me i need 1.

Could you post the actually model of the amp, as well as the year and model of car, to get a better idea of your charging system and the amount of current draw your amp is putting on it. It seems more like just a dying alternator, which happens, but more info would be helpful to determine if your system has played a role in its downfall. You may be able to get away with just replacing with a factory alternator, most auto parts stores can and will test your charging system for you to see if it is in fact on its way out, judging by the fact that you had not had problems before and they just started it is probably just a bad alt. Again more info would be helpful.

You may look into getting a capicator so your system doesnt put so much weight on your battery/alternator. Usually any sytem over 800 watts should have a capacitor hooked up, just check with your local electronics store, hell even wal-mart sells them in the automotive section.

90% of electrical issues is a bad ground. Check it to make sure you have a good connection, and make sure there isn't a carbon build up that could be a sign you need a thicker gauge wire or a better connection. Sounds more like you have a alternator going bad from your story. Take it off and have it tested at a autoparts store.

Your question should be. Can my old alternator handler the load? It's has been telling you it cannot. You are pulling to much power. Here what you will need to do. Install a high out-put alternator. The you may hap to add a second battery.
