Installing a CB radio in a car?
-
I have a relatively small sports car. I want to install a cb radio. Don't ask why, it's my car. Do they make car-specific cb's? Like not by model, but just for cars rather than trucks? What is a good, reasonably small antenna to get? I've heard you can hook up a small amp to your antenna to boost your range. Is there any truth in that?

I used to have a CB radio in my car and one at home. I was on CB for a number of years and fitted them to a cars and trucks. There's no difference between ones for cars or trucks however antenna position is different. Antenna tuning is very important. You need a SWR meter to tune them properly. Tuning is very important if you wish to get the best distance and long life out of the transmitter. I found mounting the antenna on a skie rack place across the center of the roof gave the best ground plane. A good ground plane gives you the best distance. Antenna amps are available but could be illegal in your area plus if your antenna isn't tuned correctly can cause TV interference and probably will no matter what. One other thing, short antennas aren't the best, nothing under four foot if you want the best performance. You can mount them anywhere on the car just depends how much performance you want.

Yes they make small CB radio's as for antenna;s ,, I always like the K40. yes it is tall but it is Great antenna that needs no amp. I do not know about any new antennas as for antenna amps.. not sure they make amps for that but they do make amps for the the CB that will increase your radio strength.

I think you'll be disapointed with the lack of people out there to talk to. The people you will be able to recieve, that will be able to hear you with your "reasonably small antenna" will probably just be idiots anyway. If however you still have the desire to do so, Radio Shack sells just what you need. As far as linear amplifiers, They're illegal. But available if you know the right people. They would burn up your little antenna though.

Modernize to a cell phone :P But yea, they make signal boosters (amplifiers) for your CB, but your best bet is to get a CB that's already powerful and has a powered-mic (some of those compact radios have a cheap mic that isn't powered and they are quiet and sucky). I've never seen an amplifier that is particularly for the antennae, but if you amp the signal of the radio itself, you're essentially amping the antennae too, I guess.
