General Subwoofer question?

Subwoofer question?

  • Hey guys, whats up? Left Rear speaker in my car is broken, I am planning to by subwoofer and install it myself. My question do I need an amplifier for subwoofer or I can just connect it to existing left rear speaker cable? Thank you very much, and also subwoofer won't be more than 12 inch. OK thanks.

  • Answer:

You need an amp, plus you need to run cables from the radio that are specific for a sub. If you hook a sub up to your existing speaker wire, chances are that your radio isn't powerful enough to power the sub, and the sub will also try to play high notes, which will sound horrible.

You will need to have a separate amp for the sub. The power coming from the deck will be full range and about 60watts max. For a sub you will need more power and they are usually fed a signal that is crossed over at about 100 - 120Hz. Recommend a sealed box if you are building yourself as they are much easier to build and design and have more tolerance for errors. You will probably need to replace the rear speaker with another (best to do both at once they are usually sold as pairs).
