Can I set Amp watts lower?

Home speakers for car amp?

  • So I got two home speakers, they are Sony ssf5000's and they are rated for 150 watts rms. and since there pretty much isn't any home receiver that can put out 150 watts at 8 ohms that's less than $300, could I use a car amp? The only way I believe that would be right way to set this up is to get a 4 channel amp, so I can bridge the two left channels to the left speaker and bridge the two right channels to the right speaker. I wouldn't think wiring in a higher ohm configuration could damage the amp like wiring lower in ohms, but am I wrong? And do you have any other suggestions of what I should do?

  • Answer:

By the time you purchase a power supply to run the car amp in the house you will wish you had just went ahead and paid the $300 for the home receiver! Unless you have one lying around that's powerful enough, don't even consider it an option. They are expensive! However, there are options like not having to run so much power. Just because the speaker is rated for a certain rms doesn't mean you have to supply it for it to perform. I would look for something that is about half, but less than that won't warrant damage. You will hear distortion and want to turn it down far before you damage something unless you are being negligent. Go on ebay and have a look. Unless you are wanting a 5.1 setup you should be able to find something good enough for not a whole lot of money.
