How do i power up my car radio?

How can i power a stock car radio to where i can use it in my house?

  • I have a stock radio from my 1997 buick century. Its nothing special but i want to cut a hole in my wall of my bedroom and put a few car speakers in my wall and the radio. i have watched a few videos on youtube showing how to power a radio but i cant get it to turn on. It sounds like it is trying to eject a cd when i first power it with (a laptop charger that has 19 volt output) PLEASE HELP

  • Answer:

Nineteen volts is way too high an input voltage and the 2 or 3 amps is probably way too low to properly power amp and speakers you need a 12 volt source that can put out 10 amps or better to power most stock radios. Another problem is most cheap power supplies will introduce noise. I knew someone who used an old car radio mounted in a 5 gallon bucket with speakers he also had a 12 volt tractor battery in the bucket under a disk of ply wood. He charged it with a car charger but the charger couldn't run the radio it would get hot if he hook it up while the radio was on. The battery could run the radio for two 8 hour days without a charge but that would probably depend on how loud you played it and how big the battery was.

Somewhere between 11.4v and 15v, and between 8a and 15a is what most radios use. The amperage depends on how high quality and loaded the radio unit is but 11.4v is the bare minimum most radios will function and anything above 17v can cause severe damage to the unit and/or the internal parts(i.e. the motor for the cd player, screen backlights, etc). You should need about 80% of what the fuse is rated for on the unit, to power it(or, if it doesn't have one, expect about 10 amps) Most of the time, you need a standard car battery with a float charger/maintainer that has a regular charge function(both can be picked up anywhere that sells more advanced automotive maintenance stuff like from Walmart) The batt charger will run you about $20-40 depending on brand and functions. The batt depends on size, where its from, etc. but will start around $50. That's the most easily done way to run it inside. There are more specialized 12v batteries you can get about the size of 3-4 14oz cans of something to drink but those can run upwards of $200-500 each.. That setup will also let you use a very small amp if you choose to. I would recommend against using the laptop charger for the voltage output being too high and the amperage output being too low. You could try looking for a 120v ac to 12-14v dc power inverter though, however those seem to be very expensive when you get anything above 6 amps

Post believed another person which used a vintage car or truck r / c placed in the 5 gallon pail by using presenters this individual also experienced any twelve volt tractor battery pack in the pail within any computer connected with ply timber. This individual incurred it which has a car or truck charger however the charger didn't run that r / c it could obtain sizzling in the event this individual hook it up as you move r / c appeared to be about.

First, check to make sure you have the ground and positive wire hooked up the right way. There may be a 19 volt supply from the charger but it only puts out about 5 amps. That may not be enough to power the stereo up.
