Should I do the Big Three Upgrade?

Will I need a big three upgrade for my setup?

  • I have an 89 Honda accord lx-i with a dual 200 watt head unit, 2 10' kenwoods 1000 watt peak 300 watt rms, being powered by a 500 watt 2 way crunch amp. Im looking into buying a 1000 watt mono block amp because the amp I have cuts out when the bass gets too heavy. Will I need a big 3 upgrade to run a 1000 watt amp or will I be okay without it? How much does it cost to do the big 3?

    big three would mainly be use for high watt systems. in this case you will be fine and definitely wont need to do this. All you really need is a perfect TRUE 4 gauge wire and you'll be ok. i have a 1500 watt rms amp with two twelves and a regular 4 gauge amp kit and have no problems only a little dim in the lights but not really noticeable. Also the bass doesn't cut off or nothing. The price for a big 3 depends on what 0 gauge wire you will buy there are some cheap 0 gauge and true 0 gauge. i have a friend who bout a 25 foot roll of 0 gauge for 37$ and 3 packs of 2 0 gauge terminal rings for 4 dollars each. the terminals were fine but the 0 gauge was kinda cheap but still did the job. so around 50 dollars the cheapest.

My system actually puts out 1,000 watts. I have 0 AWG throughout the entire car and a 200 amp alternator. :) Basically, measure your voltage drop at the amplifier and make sure you're not dropping too much, and go from there. Chances are the reason your amp cuts out is you have the subs wired below the stable limit of the amplifier. If you corrected that, you'd probably be just fine with the amp you have.
