Why does my car stereo only pick up AM stations but not FM?

What is it about my car radio that it can pick up AM/FM stations that I can't get from my stereo ?

  • Is it just a matter of having more power to amplify the signals or are the components better ? I just have the standard radio that came with my 97 Jetta.

  • Answer:

Car stero recievers are stronger to compensate from bieng on the move all the time.

I agree with the current answer and will add that dBf is the measure of how sensitive an FM tuner is. I doubt you will find the spec for the factory radio but you may be able to find it in the owner's manual for your home stereo. The number is usually around 10 and the lower the number the better so a tuner rated at 8dBf will pull in more stations than one rated at 12dBf. If the book for your stereo doesn't have this number it is probably because it is so high that they felt ashamed to publish it.
