What are the components of a car battery?

How many 12v electronic components can i add to my car battery?

  • Answer:

It is not the battery that limits what you can safely run, the vehicles alternator max amperage out put is what determines how much of a load you can sustain. Also the alternator should never be forced to run more then 85% capacity for any prolonged period of time, doing so would greatly reduce its life. If you are wanting to run lots of extra components you should upgrade to a higher output alternator to keep up with demand. The higher output will not harm your vehicle because alternators will only generate what is demanded of them, and when the load lessons they lower their amperage output accordingly.

As many as you want. It won't hurt your car if you install standard stereo, CD changer, TV, CB radio etc. But if you install too many (especially big-big power of audio system), you need to change your battery to the bigger one or even your alternator to overcome the load.

A million. Seriously though, it's more about the total current draw than the specific number of items. If you draw more than about 80% of the max current of the alternator (including for engine running and such) then your battery will be getting so little charge that it will go flat very quickly. Install a big enough battery and alternator, and decent cable, and there's no stopping you!

If your worried that you have too many connected, heres a simple test you could do. Buy a cheap 12V DC Battery Checker and put it on the battery, Plug everything into the car that you want. and turn on the car. The battery should rise from around 12V to 14V when the car is running. whilst everything is turned on and you cars running your battery shouldnt drop below 11.5V. You will see in big subwoofer systems that everytime the subwoofer 'Bangs!" the voltage meter will drop and then rise slowly in between. if it drops below 11.5V you'll need a High Farad Capacitor to store the charge.

depends on the draw that they use
