Can I use speaker wire as ground wire for a switch?
-
This is the 4th time I have had to type this all in because I accidentally hit the back button on my mouse! Hi. I installed an amp for my car radio today. The amp works fine and everything. I hooked up a switch to the power wire of the amp, so I could easily turn it on and off. There is a ground slot for the switch. Now, I dont know for sure if the switch even needs to be grounded. It works for turning the amp on and off without bieng grounded. But, there is a light on the switch that says if its on or not. That light will not work unless the switch is grounded. Now for my question. I don't know what wire to use to ground the switch, and the only wire I have left is speaker wire. SO, can I use spreaker wire to ground the switch? Also, there is a ground wire on the amplifier to. Will it affect it to have it grounded twice? lol. ok some info that might help power wire thats hooked up to the switch: 30 amps, 10 gauge speaker wire I might use: 18 gauge is all i know. Thanks in advance

The ground wire to the switch only needs to handle the current required by the switch's built-in light, so it doesn't need to be a large wire at all. Nor do you need to worry about ground loops, as the switch isn't part of the signal chain. You can use speaker wire for your ground function without a problem. It's unusual to control an amplifier by directly switching the power wire. The preferred method is to put a switch on the remote control wire. This doesn't require a heavy-duty switch, and eliminates the chance of voltage drops through the switch contacts. Make sure that the switch you're using is rated for at least 30 amps.

your ground should be the same gauge as the power. Just in case. Wait and go to the store and buy some 10 gauge. 10 gauge can handle 30 amps, 18 gauge can handle only about 8 or 10. Good way to make a fire. And yes, if you ground the two items incorrectly, you'll get a ground loop, and noise in the system. You might want to get a floating ground device, or just be sure to ground them to the same place. Tho, I'm far more well versed in AC (house) electric than DC (car) electric,
