What are the components of a car battery?

Will adding a second car battery put a "strain" on the alternator or other components of my 97 Honda CR-V?

  • I often have to run electronics for long periods off of my car battery's power (without the engine running). It would be very helpful if I could double the runtime of these devices, so I'm considering adding a second battery. Thanks for any information or advice!

    for that type of situation get a deep cycle battery and a dual battery isolator . that way you can run your electronics off of the rear battery without running your normal stating battery down. then when you start your car the alternator will recharge both batteries. doing this has two advantages, 1. you will not get stranded if your battery gets too low. 2. most deep cycle batteries will last longer under load than a standard car battery.

It is not wise to put two batteies in parallel unless you know how to wire heavy duty diodes. Putting them in series will destroy your car. Locating a second battery might be tricky. Carry a jumper cable in case the battery dies, or join the AAA.

get regular battery charger for that setup/expect premature batt failure/that constant recharge and discharge is gonna cause problems

it will put more strain on your alternator because it has to charge two batteries. it would be good if you run things with the car off.
