Can i connect my ipod to my car stereo?

Hi guys, i dont know anything about cars, i was wondering if i can connect my ipod to my vw polo (1997) stereo? and if so what plug, how much and where from? It may well do. VW have a kit to interface with VW standard Audio systems. I have one installed in my VW Passat it works great and shows up on the radio controls as a external CD player.
