What is the best HD Radio Head Unit?

New head unit keeps cutting out?

  • I just put in a new head unit in my 2001 durango. it works fine until usually at night or on a cold day/night it will start cutting out then turn off then back on multaple times. it will keep doing this until i just turn it off. do you know what could possibly be the problem. ive checked multiple times and the wiring is correct. the only thing is that the ground from the factory stereo has no place to go. but i figured the new stereo wouldn't work if it was needed. it has nothing to do with the speakers or the subs i know that for sure. im hoping its just the new head unit. but the worst case senerio is its just too powerful for the car. i cant return it but i do have a warrenty on it to i can swap it out. heres a link to the onei got. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Kenwood+-+50W+x+4+MOSFET+Apple%26%23174%3B+iPod%26%23174%3B-Ready+CD+Deck+with+Built-in+HD+Radio/1947141.p?id=1218301987501&skuId=1947141 any feed back will be great. whoever helps me out most will get best answer. thanks.

  • Answer:

if you dont have the ground wire (or ground strap ) hooked up then you are grounding through the antenna wire and that may be your problem. if so ... hook up that strap/wire to the radio and see if it fixes it. there should be a post or threaded hole on the back of the radio for a strap. if not that... then you may have to get it checked by a shop bc there could be several reasons for the problem. bad speaker, bad connection causing voltage drop, factory wiring prob, short in speaker wire, etc.

Could be few different problems: 1. Too many speakers running off your deck = overheating = deck turning off. 2. Bad ground and power wires. Right now, from what you've said, you have no ground wire going to the chasis of the car. This = bad. The only reason your system is even functioning now is that it's pulling the ground from the connection to the antenna. This is a horrible way to ground your deck. Mount your ground wire to a piece of bare metal on the chasis. Use a ring terminal, a self tapping screw and a washer and you'll be set.

It's not going to be 'too powerful' for anything. It just runs on 12 volts just like anything else in your car. I find it odd that it only does it at night.. If all wiring IS correct like you say and it has a good Positive/ground connection, it's a faulty head unit.

I highly doubt a headunit is too powerful for a car..Make sure your fuses are good and tight and it is really important to have your ground grounded properly. Check out the ground wire you said you weren't using. Check power too.
