Answer:
the high pitched ringing didnt come from ur sub. if everything was still working while the ground wire wasnt connected that could be bad news for ur head unit. amps will ground out through rca cables if the amps poorly grounded which can damage the head unit. that may not be the case tho its something to remember. first things first is check all fuses (this is ALWAYS the first step when troubleshooting). then recheck ground wires ensuring a soild connection to the chasis free of paint. then double check the remote wire on both ends. if u have a volt meter or any kind of current tester it would definitely help. if after all of this u still have nothing, check the ground again. a good ground should be as short as possible by the way. still not working??? then im not sure, good luck

you answered your own question,a good ground for the amplifier is needed in a place that is as close to the amp as possible into a place with a clean steel area.use a self tapping sheet metal screw and an o ring crimped to the end of the ground coming off the amplifier itself.no ground means no power in the amplifier itself.and wile your at it check all wiring connections.and the first answer you got is possible so if your still getting the high pitched noise swap out the RCA cable from head unit to amplifier.if your still getting the high pitched noise your head unit was cooking because of the lack of a good ground to your amplifier.head units are easy to replace.go to (eBay.com/car audio then head units) and find a new one or a new used one.
