Will burnt DVD's play on stock car DVD players?

I have a 2010 Jeep Commander with an in dash DVD/Nav and it will play bought DVD's but when I tried a burned DVD-R it said unable to read disc. So then I tried a DVD+R and it just said Data but wouldn't play. Is it because the movie files on the disc are Mp4's or am I basically screwed lol

Format type is very important. Find out what format the system will read and then use that format to burn disks.
