Question about Subwoofer Enclosures?

  • Hello. I'm planning on building my own subwoofer enclosure for my vehicle, and I'm wondering how much space I need to have between the subwoofer and the back of the enclosure. In order to fit in my vehicle, my enclosure is going to have to be pretty narrow, so I'm wondering what the minimum amount of space needed between the subwoofer and the enclosure is. Obviously I don't want to have them touching, but is around 1/2 an inch, or an inch enough space? I'm going to make sure I build the box big enough to the subs specifications, and hopefully as narror as I can make it while still getting the best out of the subwoofer.

    about an inch or and inch and a half should be fine, my buddy builds enclosures all the time and they all stay together, just make sure you put it together correctly and seal it correctly otherwise it will break!

With minimal distance, you're going to find the performance affected. Also, my friend ran into a problem where there was massive vibration because of a misplaced sub. Personally, I think that building your own sub house is great on budget. However, get it checked by a professional (Best Buy does it for free) before you do anything permanent. Good luck. (Best Buy techs usually have nothing better to do, and they are pretty experienced. Ran into this guy there who builds custom sound systems as a side job, and he was happy to help out for free.)
