Need help with my locked car radio.

Need help on changing a car radio?

  • Ok, so I've bought my first car, and its in great shape except for the aftermarket radio not working. I know what's wrong with it - it's the front removable bit, and it's short circuited and fried. Its too old a model to be able to get replacement parts, so I need to buy a new radio. Problem is, it's connected to a CD changer in the back of the car, so I don't know what needs to be done (if anything) when buying a new radio, in order for it to be able to connect to the changer. As I say, I'm unable to buy an exact replacement so it needs to be a new one, and it may as well be because I wanted to get something with MP3 capability anyway =) As my funds are incredibly non existent; I don't want to have to pay to have someone look at it (I can't!) , I want to ebay a new radio for a few pounds and fit it myself! So if anyone could help me out here with the info, that would be a great help =)

  • Answer:

if you stay with the same brand aftermarket stereo, the cd changer wiring will plug right in the back of the new stereo.and if you choose not to use the same brand name they make Adapter plug in so your cd changer will match up to your new stereo.not a big problem now if you want to swap out the stereo just go to wall mart car audio area or any car audio dealer and give him the yr make and model of your ride, they will sell you the right plug in for your type car this gets wired to your new head units wiring harness and plugs into the two plugs you unplugged your factory stereo from.its called plug and play.this comes with a wiring diagram follow it,its color coded.if you already have an aftermarket stereo in the car there's a good chance the wiring im talking about is already attached to the aftermarket stereo you have but you do not have the wiring diagram,if your smart enough swap it out if not its 9 bucks for a new one with the wiring diagram.if your he rting for cash take a look on www.eBay.com/car audio then whatever your looking for.they have new and used equipment, check it out it can't he rt.and www.youtube.com/car audio and whatever you need to know,if you can think of it they have a video on it.good luck with your system.

Well, you really didn't ask a question here but I can offer this advice. Typically you can purchase and adaptor harness to compliment the stereo. Once you manage you remove the unit, it will be pretty self explanatory. Also, you should have stated what kind of car it is in your question.

Go for the same brand, and make sure it has CD changer capability, then it will fit just fine. Second hand is a good option too if you're short of cash. If you choose a different brand, chances are the CD changer cable won't fit, otherwise it will be a simple plug-in job.

if in the UK, you can get radio/CD players with the option of connecting your mp3,or CD player, you need to check with the seller,, all you will need is a removal kit, this you can buy from Halfords or Maplins, they also sell any adapters you might need
