Best Subwoofer Enclosure for Metal?

  • Hello. I listen to a lot of metal and techno, so I want my subs to be able to react quickly, but also hit the low requencies. I'm going to get two 10" subwoofers and I'm wondering what type of enclosure I should build for them. Should I go with a sealed enclosure with the volume closer to the maximum recommended, or should I make a ported enclosure with the volume close to the minimum recommended? I know that in a sealed enclosure, if I build the box with a smaller volume, it will give me really tight accurate bass, but won't be able to hit the lows as easily. That's why I was thinking sealed with close to the maximum recommended volume, so it wouldn't have as much trouble hitting the lows, and since it's a 10" it will still be really accurate. I was also thinking that I could build a ported enclosure with the smallest recommended volume so it would give me nice volume and low frequency, while still being accurate. I'm kind of leaning toward the ported enclosure, because it should give me nice volume and low frequencies, while still being accurate since i'm using a 10" subwoofer. My friend has 10's in a ported box and his sounds pretty nice. By the way, I'm getting two subwoofers even though I listen to metal, so don't tell me I should only get one because two is too much. Thanks for your input!

Dude, I listen to a lot of Psy Trance and I also like Extreme metal. I chose a sealed enclosure, the smallest recommended volume for my subs, JVC SW8210's 1.25cu ft. I built the box myself, and made sure to provide as much internal bracing as possible without losing my internal volume. I built it with 3/4" MDF board, then I sealed and strengthed all joints with countsunk woodscrews and fiberglass cloth. Make your enclosure as strong as possible so there is little flexing, I also stuffed it with polyester fill ( stuff from your sleeping bag) to help eliminate back waves. I got 2 10"s in a jeep TJ. IMO Ported boxes provide boomier bass, which is great for metal if its tuned properly, you will need to sacrifice more space though. Sealed, is better for techno-because the bass is tighter and more punchy-you can make sealed boxes smaller, and will afford a flatter response-plus they are super easy to build. You could also try a bass-reflex (bandpass) enclosure, maybe the best of both world for you.

You could go with the a sealed box to get that super flat response and the larger size to still have that 'boomy' bass. Or you could use a ported box on the smaller side and keep tuning around mid 30's for the output gain.

go minimum sealed box (not near max) if you are picky about sound quality on double kicks and such... otherwise a minimum ported size box will be much louder for a little less SQ.
