Home theater sub-woofer in my car?
-
OK so i have a $2,000 Klipsch RT-10d Sub-woofer in my home theater which I am going to swap out for a better sub(nothing wrong with it just need more power. like a 30" sub lol) and I'm putting a brand new Alpine system into my car so I had a crazy idea. Is it possible to take the sub-woofer apart and construct a sub-woofer box for my car from this? It has a 700-watt amp inside of it already as well as three 10" woofers so theoretically, it seems feasible to me but I need some help as I have never done any work on a car audio system before. As a side-note, please do not post what sub-woofer I should buy as I already have a backup if this can't work. Just post what could help make this work please. I don't mean to sound rude but past experiences with Yahoo! Answers has proved that people just write whatever they want even if it has nothing to do with the question being asked.

Answer:
Several things to consider....a home theater subwoofer is not geared for Car audio play. It MAY sound good...or it may sound REALLY Bad... Why? Several things...the car makes noise....smaller enclosure...road noise...box size and physical room size. Obviously in your house...your room is....what....like 8 foot by 6 foot on a small sized room. Doesn't have much stuff in the way like car seats and bodies....in a car, you might have 4x5 feet?! clear out all the seats...and make some room.... The subwoofers may need to breath. Now the other issue, is providing power to the sub...and if you plan to use the 700watt amp built in....how do you or how will you power it up? Now if you plan to get a Car amplifier instead, then the issue is finding out what Ohms the three 10" subs are. And see if your car amp or find a car amp that would be able to give you the proper ohms for your three subs. Otherwise you could damage the amp, head unit, subs etc.... Most of the time...from past experience....had a few friends try this...and you get some bass...but just that it turns muddy...and just not clean like it was in the home. If you plan to strip the woofers out of the original enclosure, you'd need to make sure your new box is built to the specs of the 3 10's.... So finding out more info about those subs are going to be required, if you want to build a box appropriately.

Yes it could work but the main thing you need to look at is this. Any type of electronics that you plug on your home is AC (alternating current) and vehicle use batteries which are DC( direct current) so check your amp becuase it might be AC which will not directly connect to your car but could work with a power inverter. I am not familiar with the setup you want to use. But there are some eletronics out there that use AC and have built in converters to go to DC things like cell pnoe chargers and cordless house phone for example so your amp may very well be DC. Thats the only bump i see in your plan other than space constraints. Speakers are speakers and that doesnt matter.

ok these people are idiots, larry an mr wake up are absolutly right on what they said. the one guy that said "a speaker is a speaker" is 100% dead wrong , a home speaker an an audio speaker is completely diferant no matter what size or brand they are, the power an ohms are dif an even though it may work an produce great or shitty bass it can an will damage your amp, subs, head unit ect.. that a/c, d/c thing will work for the power supply prob but still not a good idea. next every subwoofer has its own specs for a box its suppose to go in which is where the air space comes in. even though the sub hits it has to have enough breathing room an air to get the full potential out of it... next, sound travels so like the other guy said if you have a sub in a big room an than in a small space things get in its way an wont travel like its designed to do{hence the differance between house speakers an audio speakers} you ever see a system in a car where the sub is mounted backward in the box???? its not just for show my man its designed like that for a reason, try hookin up a home sub in a box backward like that an let me know how it sounds...ill tell you its gonna do nothing but pop an blow faster than you can say OH ****!!!! anyway man you best bet is to listen to me an the outher two guys i said above . so even though your idea may work an sound good or bad its just not a good idea you will end up spending money on replacing subs, amp, head unit. keep the home stuff in the house an use the car audio for the car because even if the home stuff may sound good in the car, the car stuff will always sound better in the car an you will spend less money an less time tryin to figure out how to get you home stuff hooked up in your car. trust me!!!

I guess it could be done, but I think it's a waste of time and money. The amp voltage is wrong, and while there are step up converters for power I think you are asking for trouble. Car stuff is designed for cars, and home for home. I have no idea what the impact of bouncing around in a vehicle trunk may have on home equipment - and it's an expensive way to find out! I would sell the sub on E-Bay and use the proceeds to buy a proper car amp/sub and box - car subs are usually much cheaper than home subs anyway, so you may even have some money left over ;)
