What is the best way to protect my amp and sub from blowing?
-
I have 1/0 gauge wire running from my battery and a fuse near the battery. this wire runs from that fuse to my amp then to my sub. Is there anyway I can make this any safer so that I am certain my amp and sub are safe?

Answer:
- never have the amp on full gain, if its new break it in, it should be in the manual, if not then dont go over half the gain for about two weeks, no bass boost or any of that stuff, then crank it up, not more than 3/4 of full power, - set your crossover on your amp correctly according to what frequencies your sub can handle, if the wrong frequencies get through, you can damage your sub - ofcourse make sure that your subs rms is more than your amp output rms, so if you have a 900rms amp, and a 1000rms sub, then you should be fine, but if your amp has more rms, then you cant increase the gain too much as it will give more power to your subs then they can handle - if your subs are new, then they you need to break them in too, just dont crank up the volume, be easy on them, distortion is your worst enemy - dont mount your amp on your sub box, its not recommended, vibrations can destroy your amp - think about how long you use your system, if you use it constantly for hours, you may want to check on your amps temperature, dont let it get too hot, if it does, decrease the gain, try placing it in a well ventilated area, the more air space you give it, the better the cooling, and try to keep the amp facing horizontally. - make sure your ground is firmly in place, on sanded bare metal, you dont want it to get lose when driving - buy a cigarrete voltmeter to see what kind of voltage drops you get, you dont want to get big voltage drops, anything more than maybe 0.5v and you might want to consider upgrading your car wiring to 0 awg, having a yellow top battery and bigger alternator - if you blow a fuse, ask yourself why it might of blown, what was the last thing you did to your sound system, dont just replace it instantly, i did that once, the fuse blew again, so i replaced the fuse, this time the fuse didnt blow, guess what did, my amp! - makesure your wiring is neat and away from hazards that may cause wires to get squashed bent, or hot, remember there are areas under the car that can get hot due to mechanical components of the car itself, it can slowly but eventually melt your wiring hope this helps you
