How to hook car amp/sub in home?

Is it possible to hook up my car subwoofers to a home stereo?

  • I have two pioneer 12 inch subs that my boyfriend gave me because i bought him 2 15's. Im saving them for when i get a car but until then i was wondering if it is possible to hook them up to my home stereo. if it is possible, is there anything else i need besides the subs, stereo, and speakers? Do i have to have an amp?

  • Answer:

Don't look at those 1400w peak ratings. They're completely meaningless. Those are 400w rms subs. Hard to give you specific info without knowing what type of "stereo" you're working with. Most receiver/amplifiers produce 80-100w rms per channel, which would run a pair of car subs reasonably well if the impedance matches up. Usually home audio receivers/amps are built to run 6-8 ohm speakers and a lot of car speakers are 4 ohms. If your subs happen to have dual 4 ohm voice coils you can wire them for 8 ohms each and you should be able to get something out of them. Sound quality wise - the subs are not going to do much above a few hundred hz -- you'll have very little mid-range and no highs at all. If you have one of the all-in-one units it probably won't be as powerful.
