Car stereo doesn't get any AM stations, only FM stations.?
-
I have a 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass. My stereo (not original to the car) only gets FM stations, there is nothing on the AM. Is there something I can do to get it to get AM stations? I am willing to get a new stereo, or an add-on antenna of some type. I don't have an in-glass antenna in my windshield, unless it is invisible. (referring to a similar question's answer)

Answer:
What type of stereo is it? If you tell us the brand and model # of the stereo I'm sure we can figure out how to do this. On most aftermarket head units there is a setting for AM mode. Try the button labeled something like "source" or "input" - whatever lets you change from radio to CDs. If you find the setting and it searches for AM stations, but it just doesn't receive them then the antenna pick-up is most likely your problem. A car like yours should have an antenna on the rear passenger side by the trunk. Not sure if it is a retractable one or just a shorty antenna. If you only pick up a few FM stations then the antenna is probably not hooked up to the back of the stereo. Pull it out and check. If it is then the problem is most likely a broken antenna itself.

Am is becoming obsolete as it takes radio stations more power to transmit in am then fm. Maybe theirs none in your area anymore. Also the receive on after market stereos isn't always as good as a factory radio

is your antenna connected? you can pick up strong local FM stations without an antenna connected ... so maybe it isn't connected

Why would you want AM stations. Just forget about it
