Is my car stereo head unit fried?

No power to car head-unit/stereo?

  • Recently i have been having problems with my car head unit. It is a brand new Sony one which was recently working. Yesterday when i hit a speed bump and the Aux. (sound) level remained the same no matter what it was set at (so i could have the volume level at 50 but it would be the same noise as volume level 1). I later discovered the back of the head unit was getting very hot! and one wire had come undone, i reconneted the wire and nothing happened. The next day when i allowed it too cool it still did not work. so i took out a manual of how to wire a car and wired all the speakers correctly but kept the supply cables the same way. The old harness in the car was slightly worn like someone had been playing with it so i went out and bought a new one, when disconnecting the live cables i made the mistake of cutting through them all at once (seemed the easiest way and i dont know alot about wiring :s) when this happened i saw a spark it it felt like something popped. After this i replaced the fuse in the head unit and checked the 5A fuse in my Ctreon Saxo which is apparanty the audio fuse. But now my head unit will not turn on what so ever! I took a multimeter and check from the 'red wire to the 'black wire' and i am getting 12V right to the very top of the harness which plugs into the head unit. Has anyone got any ideas of how i can get this working again or even thinks i can check over?? Thanks, Tom

Go leave it in a shitty part of town and hope someone takes it and leaves your wheels. File an insurance claim and hire a professional. That first half is illegal btw so if you do it, I told you and hold no fault. Sounds like you fried something when you cut it, causing a short between wires with your cutters. seems like you got everything right till that point. Good luck fixing it, get a quote from a professional first next time.

The radio fuse is usually 10A, so it may be you're looking at the wrong fuse. There should be both a permanent live (usually yellow) and an ignition switched live (usually red) so check them both, and there may also be a reset button to hit on the stereo. Sony also usually don't turn on unless the aerial is plugged in, so make sure that hasn't come out :)
