What amp do I need to push my 2 12's?

How many watts do i need to push two 12s?

  • I bought 2 12s for my car...and many people tell me i need atleast 1000 watts to push them but i've heard that i can push them with just a good 800 watt amp..is this true?

Jorge, you need to first find out what wattage your subs are, now do not look at the peak wattage as that means absolutely nothing, only look for RMS wattage. Then take the OHMs of your subs, then take into account if they are dual 4 OHM or 2 OHM they could be wired down to 1OHM and lower. So after you find out the RMS wattage of the subs, and what OHM your running then look for an amp that fits that bill. Make sure that the amp is CEA-2006 compliant before making the purchase, CEA-2006 keeps the manufacturers honest. 07buster, the only way that you will damage the speakers by putting a higher power amp on your subs or any other speaker for that matter is by improper setting of the amp. That one you should know since you speacilize in electronics, also you should have know to look at RMS wattage as well. The other thing is how can you tell someone to just run 1000 watts to some subs that you know nothing about? The subs could only be 250 watts RMS, and this guy might not know how to set an amp. Then his subs are dead. Since you have a degree and speailize in electronics, you should know better than to give bum advice.

You did not give enough information. You need to say if the subs are 2 or 4 ohm SVC or DVC subs. Also you need to list the RMS of each subwoofer and you can get an answer.

It depends on the size of the magnet, voice-coil, impedance, etc. I have a 12" 4 ohm sub that uses 1500 watts all to its self, and i have two 12" 8 ohm that use 100 watts each. Some say it is better to have higher power speakers then amp, (the risk is to blow a circuit breaker inside your amp, however a high end amp will have current limiting circuitry) others say that it is better to run lower power speakers then your amp (the problem being that the speakers can be destroyed by too much power.) A balanced system is best, but without knowing the correct power rating of your speakers, your best bet is to run at least 1000 watts for two, 12" in-car subs. Hope this helps!
