How do I get a song on the radio?

How does car radio get signal of song name & artist?

  • How does it work when you have a car radio that has the display that shows the radio station's call letters, their name, and then gives you the song's title and the artist -- sometimes even before the song starts. How in the world does this work? I'll be the first to admit I don't understand complicated electronics.

  • Answer:

Some factory and aftermarket radio's use a technology called RDS. Some radio stations broadcast this signal along with thier other fm transmissions. It is inbedded in the frequency they send. They now have HD radio. same concept except it gives you a few extra channels to add to your favorite station.

Other answers

This information is sent by participating radio stations along with the signal. The stereo must have RDS to pick it up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Data_System
