What is the sound difference between 2 ohms and 4 ohms?

What should be the difference (numbers wise) between how many ohms for the subwoofer and the amp?

  • Im thinking about buying an Alpine SWR-1243d 12 in sub 600 RMS 1800 peak and i also would like to know DOES IT MATTER IF THE TYPES ARE DIFFERENT BETWEEN THE AMP AND SUB? If it doesnt, which it shouldnt im sure, If the sub is 4 ohms and the amp is... say 2 ohms is that bad? what would be the result if that was the case? What should the ohms be for each of my sub/amp? Matching ohms? Please someone answer!

  • Answer:

When you wire your 2 ohm sub .. you have to look at options. and those options are 1 , 2, 8 . Im not sure on the watt or power to those subs and the only thing I do know is that if you should look for a amp that puts out 600 @2 ohm or so. it is okay for the amp and sub to match.

Amps can almost always drive 2 or 4 ohm loads. Matching ohms is very important but a single 4 ohm sub will work with just about any amp. For example, an amp may be able to deliver 400 watts at 2 ohms, but only 200 watts at 4 ohms. It will work with either configuration, but you get less power output on a 4 ohm load.
