Using solid-copper HOUSE WIRE (of the proper guage) TO WIRE A CAR amp/subwoofer system?
-
Is there really a difference between audio wire and regular house wire? If you say yes then please explain, in understandable scientific terms why, or point me to a site that can.

Answer:
Audio wire is marked to show + and - if you use house wire just make sure you get the polarisation + - correct. For 120 low voltage high amperage US systems the wire is plenty thick enough, for 230 volt low amperage UK house wiring not so good for a 12 volt system.

yes. even bigger difference when you used it to wire the battry to the amp. The solid-copper house wire are design for high voltage and lov current. But, your car voltage is low, only 12 volts. Now see if you have a big amp and use 1000 watts. and calculate with the Power formula : P = V x I P stands for Power, V stands for Voltage, and I stands for Current. The currents you use in 12 volts equals 83.333 ampere. its a big current. now if you use the home voltage(220 volts) the currents equal 4.545 ampere. See the different? 83 ampere and 4 ampere. that is why the wire for car amp/subwoofer usually not use solid copper, but use hairsize copper. Of course not a single hairsize copper, but alot of it. I have a car with audio system. I use 1 swiss audio power amp 2000 watts and 2 poweramper 1500 rms Sub. and to wire the battery and the amp, I used a thumb size cable - hairsize copper.

it is not good because it breaks too easy. you need something flexible. Speaker wire is usually multi strand or more soft copper. House wire is stiff copper. But it will still work very well if you fasten it good. copper is copper

two problems with solid wire: 1. It is not nearly as flexible. 2. How do you terminate it with vibration resistant connectors? standard crimps work very poorly with solid wire. Wire above 10 guage insulated is stranded but does not have nearly as many strands (7-19 strand) as audio wire. It will work for mid-grade sound.

Yes, flexibility!!!! Your system won't mean squat without a well designed box to put your subs in. Some manufacturers have recommendations as to dimensions of various types of boxes. It is best to find someone who builds boxes if you go with something other than a sealed box. You should always match up RMS (Root Mean Square) watts of Subs and amp per channel as well as impedance's(resistances). If your amp is rated at 4Ω don't subject it to 2Ω, it will fry. Here is the formula for subs in parallel: Z = 1 / (1/sub1 + 1/sub2 + 1/sub3 + ....) For series, just add them up (sub1 + sub2 + ...). You can mix and match these equations to get the right impedance required by your amp. Example: 4 subs @ 4Ω each. If I connect two in parallel and the other two in parallel and tie the two pairs in series, I would have a total impedance(resistance) of 4Ω. So to the amp, it's just one sub. You should use a capacitor as well. Recommend for every 500 watts MAX you use a .5 Farad cap Example: 1000 watts MAX - 1 Farad cap Try http://www.soundomain.com/shop you can find some really good deals, and this site is manufacturer certified. VERY IMPORTANT WHEN SHOPPING ON-LINE!!! You will also need what's called a "line level converter" if your stock head unit doesn't have RCA outputs or your amp doesn't have high-level inputs. If you like I can send you some plans for reference. My plans are for a 4-th order band pass bass box that holds two 12's. Also included are java calculators you can use to figure parallel and series values given Ω values. Just e-mail me [email protected] I chose Blaupunkt TSw1200 subs with a Sony Xplōd XM2200GTX and it moves my coffee table around when I'm in the driveway. My amp is 1200 watts, subs are 600 watts

First off, using solid core 120V wire made for houses is not the same as car audio wire. First off, car audio wire has a thicker insulation to tolerate the variances in weather, temperature, heat, humidity, etc. - solid core wire does not and will likely rot away rather quickly. Second, solid core wire can tend to heat up quicker than car audio wire - not to mention the fact that most solid core wire is not designed to carry more than typically 50 amperes of current. (on the average, it's closer to 15-20 amperes) - car audio wire can safely handle (if you use the proper gauge) up to 200 amperes of current. And lastly, good luck trying to route solid core wire through your vehicle - it does not bend at ALL! Prepare yourself for lumps and hard times trying to install it in your car. Psssst.... - want to know what IS as good as car audio power cable and typically costs less? Welding wire...shhhhhhh....it's about half the price.

No. No difference between solid core wire, and stranded, other than flexibility, and the jackets used.

Yes there is a difference because a amp needs a certian amount of amps to work. You can use any kind of wire, hell u can even use a coat hanger, what happens when you use the worng guage wire is you put a strain on the device. That is why amps run hot, or pop fuses, and you wont get the full potential of the amp, shorten its life etc.
