How long will an inverter last on a car battery?

Tailgate! How long can I expect my 12 volt car battery to power a 20" TV and Satellite dish using an inverter?

  • Will running the engine every now and then to recharge the car battery help. If so, how often should I run the car and for how long?

  • Answer:

first look at how many amps your battery is, than add up the amps on the gear, on a deep cycle battery it is one amp hour. so if you had an 800 amp battery and had 400 amps going out, 2 hours, if you had 800, 1 hour, 1600 1/2 hour. Get the idea? The watts really won't matter since you are just converting the voltage, but the amps usage will remain the same regardless. I think. But I would say about 2 hours max, and running the car will help. but just idling won't help much.

As previous post said, I think a few hours max. (Since we all know your are going anyway) So,starting the car and idle every thirty minutes for a few minutes each time will help some, but if you want to get home, make sure you fill the tank full of fuel first, second , take along jumper cables and third, bring along a second battery. Have fun because you will be covered!

The specification that determines how long a battery will last is called the RC (Reserve Capacity) and not the cold cranking amps of the battery. This rating is in minutes and is how long the battery will supply 25-Amps at 80 degrees Fahrenheit before dropping to 10.5 volts. So if your draw is 25-Amps, then the RC rating is the minutes it should last without charging. At 50-Amps, it would be half that long.
