I am looking into gettin some subs for my car. Is it necessary to get an amp for the subs to sound good?

so i have a volvo but i am looking to get some subs, preferrably a pair or maybe three if i can get some for under $250. what i really would like to know is if it is necessary to also havhe an amplifier for the subs to sound good. if i have to buy an amp as well, that would probably put me well over my spending limit if i want to buy quality products. and another question, if i turn the volume up real high in my car, is there a good chance that i can blow my speakers without doing any type of damage to the subs?

Answer:
YES. If you do not hook your speakers on a amp, they will not be filtered for frequencies over 100 hrts, in retarted terms they will blow out, not to mention not be clear or loud. Final answer is to save your money until you have enough to spend on the whole package. Don't cheat yourself and buy some garbage and hook it up like a nukka. Have someone professional hook it up so you can show up the next guy. Trust that brotha. I have one 10" audiobahn 1000d its 900 watts RMS power which means it easily handle 1800 watts to the speaker with no problem, and a tsunami 1000d monoblock amp on it, wrapped up in a subzone vented box, costing around 600bucks though, and it sounds punchy clear and loud, you don't have to have more speakers to have a really crisp loud sound. Just buy quality products and you will be fine. Good luck bud.

Yes...subs are worthless without a good amp.

If you do not have an amp (power source) for the subs, there will NOT be any bass......And if you turn your speakers up too loud you can blow the voice coils in your subs just like your component speakers.

your sub will probably be the first to mess up if you like your music loud...depends how much bass is in your choice of songs and how much output ur sub handles. and yes get an amp!

If you get subs you have to get an amp, otherwise they will sound like **** (for lack of a better word)! You also have to make sure that the amp you get can power the subs you get. THa watts for the subs has to match the amp or the amp has to be bridgeable. You also want to make sure that your power wire is big enough depending on what size subs you get and how many or you will drain your battery too quick. You can blow your car speakers and not the subs if your car speakers are really cheap but with a volvo i would say that they have but something of some quality in there so as long as you have the correct power supply and amp then the inside speakers and subs should work just fine at whatever volume you decide to listen to the music at. good luck! oh and you can get speakers and an amp for 250 ish you just have to buy them off the street ie: craigs list, the newspaper, a friend, or you will just have to start out really small.... well not toooo small depending on the brand you buy and where you get it from. I hope you know someone who can hook it up for you so that you dont end up getting charged for that too.

You NEED an amp. because even if your stereo has the power the sub needs per channel you'll more than likely put too little resistance on the head unit which will cause it to over heat. Circuit city has a bass package from bazooka with 2 subs, a ported box, an amp and wiring for $200. My friend has it in his mercedes and it's pretty loud.

Your all mixed up... you can't say tht you want quality and say you only want to spend $250 If i only had a 250 dollar budget, i would get ONE decent sub and a small amp to run it. you could pick up one sub for around $100 and a small amp to run it for $100-$150 remember more is not always better if you have to sacrifice quality.
