What should I put on this CD?

I have a 1990 Toyota Celica and want to put a new cd player in it. What tools do I need and how do it?

  • The Celica currently has a tape player in it and I want to take it out and put a cd player in it. Don't I just use some kind of tool on the sides of the tape player and take it out, then put the cd player in and plug it in the wires? Heres the link to the cd player that i want to put in: http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-CQ-C1333U-MOS-FET-Receiver-Front/dp/B000EAOV88 What tools do I need and how do it? Thanks.

I would personally recommend against the panasonic, they are far too bright when you drive at night. Also an unfortunate condition of their super bright display are the thieves all round us... they see how bright it is too. Call me paranoid, but its the truth. And its also tougher to see the LCD display when its as low in your dash as it will be. I would recommend an alpine, or a pioneer. Now for the install, since youre not taking it to a pro, and you probably dont have all the right tools, you will need a cordless drill with a phillips head, or a longer phillips screwdriver. You will also need a panel removal tool, or a small spoon (not a spork!) and some crimp caps and a crimping tool. Last, but not least, a metra wiring harness number 70-1761. First, the shifter bezel (the piece of plastic that goes around the shift boot) will need to come off. There are no screws, just unsnap it from the base by either using your panel remover (spoon) or grab the sides of inside edging where the boot meets the plastic and pull. This done, you now have 2 screws that hold the big Radio bezel (the plastic around the radio) in place. REmove those and set them aside. take out the ashtray byy pulling out and pushing down on the metal tab. Next use your panel remover (or spoon) and where the radio bezel meets the rest of the vinyl (on the upper part of the bezel) stick it on one of the sides and GENTLY pop the bezel out. Youve gotta remember youre dealing with 17 year old plastic. The ENTIRE bezel should remove, and if not use the panel remover to unclip it, and push it to the side. Now that you have a hole in your dash, you see guts. On the side of the radio there are metal brackets with 4 screws, 2 on each side. THey should also be phillips head screws. Remove each one, and save them in your special place. The radio and the pocket should flop out and smack your shifter if youre not careful. Easy nuff. Now unplug the antenna, and the 2 plugs on the back side of the radio. Now you should plug in the harness you Purchased seperate of the radio to make sure that they fit. If they dont fit, then I didnt tell you to buy the wrong one. There are 2 plugs behind the dash that you must locate that will fit, and they will be either dangling around, or plugged into a metal box towards the passenger side. When you do in fact locate and be sure that they plug in, get out of your car and sit down. Get your crimpers, and butt connectors, then the harness that came in the bag and the harness that came with the stereo you just bought, and look at them. Looks like a mess doesnt it? You probably cant do it can you? Yes you can! Each wire in each package will correspond to a color of a wire in the other package, and unless youre color blind, you should have noticed this. Tie together and crimp (seperately) each of the individual colors. Yellow to yellow, black to black, white with stripe to white with stripe, white to white, so on and so forth. Because you will probably ask the question later, I will head it off at the pass. If the radio you bought does not have an orange wire on it, then you dont connect it to anything. But being that you have a celica, the blue wire (solid) from the radio will connect to the blue wire from the harness, and that controls your power antenna. If your power antenna is broken as so many of them are, then do not connect the two. Also if you do have extra wires, and you will, simply put a crimp on each that dont go anyplace and forget about them. After all your connectors are connected, plug the 2 harnesses you bought extra into the car, and plug in the radio to the harness for the radio. Turn on the key and make sure it turns on and works. If it doesnt, then you have a bad connection somewhere, or connected them improperly. Check it out, check your fuses, get to know a multi meter, or a pro shop. If it works, then Beautiful! Unplug just the radio, and on the sides of the radio that was in there, there is a big bracket for both the left and right hand side that you need to remove using your screwdriver. Using the screws that came with the radio, refasten Your new radio into the same bracketing in the same place using the holes on the side of your new stereo, or get creative and switch around the pocket and the radio, but be wise that your cupholders are right underneath, and electronics and liquid dont go together. Now You can officially put your car back together in the reverse order and drive around with the sounds of a cd player, but remember this - dont try to act like you really know what youre doing rookie or you will burn some stuff up. All cars are different and it takes lots of experience and know how to do it all.
