What kind of amp would I need for these speakers to run optimally?

What kind of Amp do I Need? Speakers: JBL GTO638(Front)/938(Rear)?

  • Ok I want some nice sound so I bought some rear speakers for my car which were the JBL GTO938. And yes they sound awesome! I have a aftermarket head unti which is a Pioneer 4Ohm 50w x 4 Channel. Which powers the speakers just fine. I don't turn the volume up too much because the sound is great and i dont have to. But I have some extra cash so I wanna buy the front speakers, which is the GTO638. Then relazing that my head unit is not going to have the power :( Doing the math it looks like i need at least 440w of RMS power for all the speakers combined. Then 960w Max which doesnt really matter . . . I should be fine with a GTO1004 4 Channel Amp with RMS @ 4 Ohms 100w x 4 Channels right? Or do I need to find another amp that has more power . . . Note: I do not intend on getting a sub, simple fact I dont need one with this kind of sound quality :D

  • Answer:

thats a damn good match to maximize clean signal strength from your amp, you need to adjust the gain or input sensitivity settings. Here's how: Set the input sensitivity controls of your amplifier to their minimum level (counter clockwise). Put in a CD and turn the receiver's volume control up (you might have to raise the amp's gain just a bit to hear the music). When you hear distortion, stop. Turn the volume down until it disappears. As much signal as possible is passing from the receiver to the amp. This maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio, and leaves your system less prone to engine noise problems. Keep the volume setting here. Now turn the gain controls on the amplifier up until it's as loud as you'll play it. If you hear distortion, slightly decrease the gain settings. Now you've optimized the amp's output with the receiver's volume set near maximum. You can turn the volume almost all the way up and not damage your speakers or amplify distortion.
