What is the difference between a 2ohm sub and a 4 ohm sub?

Can you wire a 4 ohm dvc sub to stay for 4ohh or do your need a 2ohm dvc sub to wire to 4 ohm in series?

  • I bought 1 channel amp and at 2ohms its too much power for one sub but at four ohms itll be fine, but i only want one subwoofer not 2 so im planning on an orion hcca 12inch but not sure if i get the 2ohm one or the 4 ohm one since i want to run the amp at 4ohms not 2.

  • Answer:

In my opinion you should go ahead and get the dvc 4ohm sub. Yes, this give the amp a 2ohm load BUT it will also make more power, more efficiently at 2ohms rather than 4ohms. So simply turn the amp gain down a little. This will give you much more reserve power (dynamic headroom) so you will achieve greater sound quality and greater range and depth in your bass response. Remember, it is better to overpower your sub rather than under power it as clipping (amp running out of power) is what heats up and ultimately blows voice coils. So just be a little cautious and turn up the gain slowly till you get the amount of bass you want.
