What is the difference between 2-way and 3-way car speakers?

I need to replace my car's rear speakers. ( 6x9) Should I buy 4way, 3way, or 2way speakers?

  • Answer:

Yep, a 2-way is the way to go. 3 and 4-ways don't really reproduce anymore frequencies than 2-ways. They ONLY cost more. Get a good brand like Boston Acoustics, Alpine, Infinity, Morel, Eclipse, or Focal. Components are unneeded for the rear (you can't hear them as well as the front speakers). You ideally want the better speakers up front where you hear them. Find the model # you like and shop around. Good Luck!

get the best 2 ways you can afford. everything else is marketing crap. many $20,000 home stereo speakers are 2 ways, the 3 way and 4 way crap is a good way to waste money

The best thing would be components. Otherwise, get a 2 way with a swivel tweeter.

i would install 3 way cause 4 way doesn't really have any difference in sound quality

Usually the 3way and 4way 6X9's have a higher max rating than the 2way's. Do you plan on using an amp? You may also want to check clearance. If the magnets are too big, they may hit on the suspension rods that hold up your trunk.
