What do I need for a setup audio system in my car?

So I want to get an audio system in my car. My friend said he can wire it all up for me. I need an amp and a sub woofer. I don't want to wake the neighborhood up but I want something better than my regular manufacture system. What things will I need? amp, sub woofer, wiring kit? what else? Maybe a 400 watt amp, with a 12 inch? maybe 2? I had a friend place a cd player in already and now all I need is What? I don't know **** about this, can someone help?
