How to unlock a factory car stereo?

What if I don't want the factory-installed stereo in a new car?

  • I'm going to be buying a new car soon but satellite radio is not offered. I have to have my Sirius satellite radio so I'm going to have to buy one and have it installed after I buy the car. My question is, do I have to buy the factory-installed stereo even though I'm just going to remove and replace it? Is there any way to request to not have the factory-installed stereo and get some kind of a credit for the price? Do I have any options or am I stuck paying for something I don't need or want? By the way, this is all new to me so please be kind and helpful and not insulting or sarcastic. :-)

your the boss as of right now so they should do back flips if you ask.they are going to try and talk you into one of there sound systems.if you want the car without the stereo they should do this for you.i would check in with a good car audio shop in your area and see if he is going to be able to hook you up.and if there's anything that has to say installed in your ride for a sound system.the reason im saying this is there's many functions that run threw the wiring harness in new cars and you have to make sure everything is still working with the stereo removed.these are all questions that have to be know before you commit to buying your ride without the stereo.in new rides there's most times a cheap external amplifier for 16 speakers that are junk to begin with, the cheap head unit and there all set up to run with each other.these are some of the excuses they are going to use on you.see a pro installer of the real deal and ask him your questions, information is free.good luck with your new ride.

Modern cars all come equipped with stereos. You can't order one without unless maybe you're buying a commercial truck or van. The issue being that new vehicles store essential electronic components in the radio. GM is notorious for doing this, things like door chimes and some times even lights and other essential safety features are stored inside the radio. The radio acts as part of the computer system for the car. So without a radio essential functions of the vehicle wouldn't work! Now, with your satellite radio, you could have it installed into the stock stereo. It depends on the kind of unit you have. There are those small Sirius radio receivers that are used to install into a stock system and any audio shop can do that. Just take it to a good audio installer and ask to have Sirius installed into your stock system. However, if you want a new stereo this can be done too. You can get a nice unit installed with bluetooth and ipod and satellite ect. This will also need to be done by a reputable audio dealer. They will remove the stock stereo and add an aftermarket one. To do so you will have to purchase a mounting kit so the new stereo fits in the dash and looks decent and an adapter kit. The adapter kit will allow for the removal of the stock system, it will take over control of the essential elements that the stock stereo provided; such as: Lights, airbags, chimes, ect. as mentioned above. These are expensive though and will run $200+ alone depending My suggestion is have the Sirius module installed into the stock system, it basically adds a small controller the size of an ipod somewhere on your dash for you to control the satellite, this is the cheapest method. Doing this you could also order the car with a premium sound system in order to get some good beats. If you want to replace it anyways then simply buy the car with the cheapest stereo as available from factory.

most cars come with cheap crappy stereos why you would even bother to worry over this is beyond me who cares? do what everyone else does let some stereo store have your crappy stock radio and put what you want into the vehicle. All you can do is ask the dealer when buying the car. Im sure they will be happy to rip out the stock radio for a fee.its not that big a deal ok?

You'll have to go to your local car dealer and ask them. They are the ones who would know since they order the cars to put on their lot.
