Why are people who get their coffee from STARBUCKS usually better looking than those who go to DUNKIN DONUTS?

Do you Tip the Dunkin' Donut People?

  • The people in my office and I have been joking recently about my dicust with the people at Dunkin Donuts. I have recently started stopping there in the mornings for coffee. I stopped going to Starbucks because $4-$5 for a coffee is a little extreme. After I did the math, I had a $100 monthly expense at Starbucks, for a 20o.z. a day cup? So my extra large coffe at Dunkin Donuts comes to $2.22, that leaves $.78 as my change. No matter if I give them $3, or $100 the change minus the bills, is always $.78 The thing is, the women in the window will hand my the bills, and then hold onto the $.78 until I stick my hand back out of my truck window to get it. I understand tipping for good service, but for pouring a coffee and handing it to me? I did some rough calcualtions, our Dunkin Donuts opens at 5a.m., and there is a steady flow of cars until about 9:30a.m., thats 4 1/2hrs, and about a car every 2minutes. So, roughly 135 cars a day. All of their menu items total to just over a dollar, so there is about $.60-$.75 change everytime. If you average $.65 a car, and x's that by 135, thats about $95 a day in tips. I assume they make minimum wage, which here in Md. is $7.10, so jus during that 4.5hrs she gross's $32, + the $95, she's making before taxes $127 just in that 4.5hrs. The moral of my argument/rant is the women gives me a dirty look everytime I take my change back. If she gets all of those tips, she is grossing over $30K a year for pouring coffee.... and more then 2/3's of that is tax free. Am I beinga cheap skate, or does anyone else think thats outrageous...I have yet to see anyone at McD's or the BK trying to take my change, why do they want it at the Dunkin Donuts?

  • Answer:

I found that people do this at the Sonic drive-ins as well (I don't know if you have one of those around or if you have ever been to one) But as a rule of thumb for myself... I don't tip anyone at a fast food restaurant... and I consider Dunkin' Donuts as "fast food"... it is one thing for them to keep it when you say keep the change... but it's totally different if they keep it EXPECTING you to give it... You aren't at IHOP or something where tipping is expected of you... ADD: They don't always use skates... but yeah they do bring your food to you... unless you go to the new ones where they have a drive through... imagine a drive through at the drive in... it's a pretty funny thought... but still to me it's a bigger thing when they expect it (even though they are paid minimum wage) and try to keep it... for me it's a principle thing and I just use my debit card now...

Of course not! That is a fast food place. I don't know why we don't pay our restaurant help more in the US so they would not depend on tips so much. Don't let them fool you. Grams

That's a great question, why do they ask for tips at Dunkin Donuts? I have in the past tipped them if I felt the service was particularly good or pleasant and I was in the mood but why should we at the end of the day?

I think you think wayyy too much about 78 cents. I hate change, so I always leave whatever change is left. Sheesh. My boyfriend says I over analyze things too much, but I think you might be even worse =X lol

oh crap, you were suppose to tip them? i always thought they don't take tips.
