Is it illegal to write the license number and phone number of a customer on their check?

  • I work as a cashier and the store I work for requires that I write the license number and phone number of all customers on their check in order to process it to avoid check fraud. Some customers lately have been refusing to do this saying that it is against the law for me to write their license or phone number down. What is the law in this subject?

no, it's not illegal to write the license and phone numbers. it is, however, illegal to make a copy or take it out of their sight.

its not illegal...its the law...some business require it so they can trace BAD checks...those people that dont offer their information are probably shady and dont want you to know what they are up to. I work at a drug store and I usually circle the phone number (if its on the check) OR ask for the DL#. If its a large purchase I ask for both. Some customers need to start putting it all on there...that way they wont be asked.

Where I live it isn't illegal. I have my phone number and DL number written on my checks already. I used to work as a cashier and yes, we did ask for people's phone numbers. Most people are not actually shady, they are paranoid that someone like a telemarker is going to start calling them all the time.

Your customers need to know that their check is not legal payment for anything. If they wish to pay by check they have to do by the rules that the party accepting the check as establish.
