What steps do i need to take to make my business 100% legal in NY state?

• I'm starting a pooper scooping business that will operate through a few different counties in NY. What exactly do I have to do to make my business legal.. I'm all set with clients, contracts and everything else i need to do but I do not know where and how i need to register my business locally, state and federally.. Also, do i need to register with IRS? IDK -confused

  OK -- you have a few choices. If you were operating only in one county I would suggest registering as a Sole Proprietorship, but in New York, SPs are registered at the county level, and you'd likely need to file in each county in which you do business. You could start in one county, see how it goes, and then file the in the next county, but you'll have three separate businesses to keep track of. You could also incorporate -- form either a corporation or an LLC. This would allow you to operate statewide. However, you'd also need to pay state and federal taxes. I would suggest that you familiarize yourself with the basics of each type of business so that you can figure out what is going to work best for you!
