How do you get Yahoo to alert you that you have a message?

Yahoo Email - how do I get a noise and pop up to tell me theres a new message? How do I know who's online?

• I have a btinternet email address which is accessed via the Yahoo emails webpage. My old computer used to give me an audio alert - a pistol sound - and a pop-up used to appear in the bottom right hand corner of my screen, whenever a new email message came in. This one (Windows XP, like the old one) won't do this and so I have no idea I have messages til I refresh the Yahoo email page. Does anyone know how I set up such alerts please? Also, my previous computer used to show which Yahoo email address users were online at the time (useful for tracking down my sister!!). It did this by showing a yellow smiley next to the persons email address... yet this computer doesn't do that either! Any ideas on how to set that up too please? Thank you.

  Hello, You can set-up alerts to let you know that you have a new mail (immediately after you receive one). To do this, you need set it at your Yahoo Messenger. Do you have Yahoo Messenger? If not, please download it. 1) How to set the Alerts at Yahoo Messenger:: a) Log-in to Yahoo Messenger; b) Select "Messenger" at the Tool-bar, a list will appear; c) Click on "Preferences"(it is the 11th option); d) Select "Alerts&Sounds" in that page; e) Check the box "Enable Alert Sounds"; f) There is a list below to "Alert me when" -- g) Click on each option in that list, and make sure the settings; h) At the end, click OK. Now, you are all set to get the "Alerts". 2) To receive these Alerts, You need to be in on-line status. That means, you have to be signed in to Yahoo Messenger. a) After signing in, click on "Messenger" b) Select "Close" (the last option); c) By selecting this, you will not sign-out, but the window will be closed leaving a smiley face at the down right corner of your computer screen. d) When you receive a new mail in your Yahoo Mail account, you will get an "Envelope" icon next to that "Smiley Face". 3) To see weather other Yahoo e-mail users are online or not:: You can check this by looking at the contacts in your Address Book. a) Log-in to your Yahoo Mail; b) Click on "Contacts" Tab at the top of the page; c) The list of your contacts' page will be opened; d) There will be a Yellow smiley face beside to the contacts who are on-line. e) Sometimes, some people chose not to display their status and sign-in as "Invisible" in Yahoo Messenger.
