How do I e-mail someone?

How someone else used my email address?

  • I received a "Failure Notice" email from [email protected] dated Sunday, September 25, 2011 8:47 PM. When I checked to see what the problem was with the recipient, I found that the sender was someone that I had never heard of apparently using my email address. The email that could not be delivered was sent by a Mattie Rice using the email address [email protected]. and was sent to [email protected]. It concerned a Craigs List personal ad. My email address is [email protected] but I have no idea who Mattie Rice is. How could this happen? Did she use my email address or did [email protected] make the mistake and pick out my email address instead of hers? Please let me know as I certainly don't want someone else using my email address. If the error was with MAILER-DAEMON, please be more carful in the future. T. Brooks Rice ([email protected])

  • Answer:

Your account got compromised. First change your password. Account help.http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/acct/in%E2%80%A6 for just about anything to do with your account. Then run anti Virus and Anti Spyware. Should be fine then.

There are 2 schools of thought among computer-security experts. Some think that you experienced a trojan or worm. It is not as dangerous as it sounds. They usually just want your Contact list. They grab it and leave. They don't send anything from your computer which is why you can't find any of the "not-so-nice" emails in your Sent folder. Since they were not sent from your computer, you have not truly been "hacked". They just send out 1 or 2 emails and they are done. You don't have to change your password. You can run your anti-virus but the spammers are long gone by the time you do. Yahoo has an August 3rd entry on their ymailblog.com about hacked accounts. They say you do need to change your password. Read their explanation. They also provide links for you if you need more help.
