What are some free email providers?

I've mainly used Hotmail ever since I first created an email. But lately it has been showing me blank screens and having difficulty loading. I'm tired of that and the spam. I wanted a sbcglobal.net account, but even though I should be able to make an account through my mom's master account it's too difficult to figure out how. -.- So which email providers would you recommend and why?
