Can picture files / sound files have viruses?

  • Ok my friend don't believe me that the picture files can't have viruses... hes kind of mentally retarded, so I wanted to show him this answerers you guys give me.. Can a picture file have a virus? what about sound files?

    I don't know about sound files, but picture files may be imposters if you received them as attachments in a spam. For example, you might receive a spam about some stranger's vacation, with "vacation.jpg" attached. The only problem is, that "vacation.jpg" could really be "vacation.jpg.exe" - an .exe file, because you have your folder options set to "hide file extensions for known file types". Therefore, it's really an virus, but it seems to be an innocuous vacation picture.

I dont think that the pictures themselves can have a virus, but they may link to one.
