How do I get email alerts on my desktop?

I downloaded the Yahoo toolbar to get email alerts BUT I don't...?

I sent an email to myself from another account and I got no notification whatsoever... Not to mention that I hate seeing the toolbar on the top part of my screen (and, yes, I ave removed almost all of the buttons). Is there a way for me to get email alerts without actually seeing that toolbar?? And why don't I get email alerts even though I have that toolbar??? Thanks guys...
Answer:

It is done through Yahoo Messenger. Logon to Messenger, click Messenger from the menu, then Preferences, then click Alerts & Sounds, then click Enable alert sounds, select "I receive a message in Yahoo! Mail", then click Play a sound, select the sound file you like, then click OK. Make sure Messenger is running and you will get a sound alert when you receive an email :)
