How to create a private distribution list?

I created a distribution but when I create an email using that distribution list it does not work properly.?

• When I go into the contacts tab and click "create message" the name of my distribution list appears in the To box but there is no leading "+". Consequently it acts as though it is a non-existent single contact email address. How can I fix this?
