How do I get my contacts back on my iPhone?

Well I am not a big fan of updates so my iPhone was on 3.0 version for a really long time but I decided to update it to 4.2 yesterday at night. So I left it syncing and went to bed but when I woke up, I noticed it was interrupted at night I guess? So it was all messed up and I did it again and when it finished all of my contacts were gone! It's really important too and I do not believe I have a MobileMe account. How do I get all of my contacts back?? And fast too!

have you tried to sync your phone with your itunes? if not did you try to back up your phone?
