Is there an easy way to merge duplicate contacts in Yahoo Address Book?

  • I have too many duplicate contacts. Most people are listed at least twice on my address book, because I added them in different places at different times, such as one address for mail, one for messenger, one for 360. I fixed some manually but most will be deleted from messenger or 360 if I delete the duplicate contact and then they'll have to be readded to those areas. I have too many contacts to go about it that way.

    One way might be to back up the file to a type that can more easily be edited, such as MS Excel. You would have to read the documentation/help file for the email program, or write to tech support. Once the file is opened, in Excel for instance, you should be able to combine the data, eliminate the duplicates wholesale, save the file, convert it back into the email format and import it back into the program. It might sound difficult but usually isn't...just a little time-consuming.

Be careful when exporting to Excel, if that is the method you choose. Excel cells will only hold 255 characters. This is predominently a problem with the NOTES field. The process might looks something like: 1) export from Yahoo to CSV (comma separated value) text file) 2) open with excel 3) remove duplicates, save file 4) remove all contacts from your Yahoo account 5) import the new CSV file. Notes: 1) backup your original CSV, just in case you want to go back to it. 2) once imported into Excel, you will loose any field data over 255 characters. At this point, if critical, I'd recommend importing into OUTLOOK (using a similar process to the one above) and using a duplicate remover utility. I don't have a recommendation; haven't used one at this point. Dom
