  It sounds like either (1) it's not really a Word document, but a Works document with the extension changed, or (2) something is wrong with your copy of Word on your computer. If it's a Works document that Word is trying to convert into Word upon opening, try to have your sender resave the file as an rtf file and try to open that. If it's your copy of Word, you may have to visit the Office website and look for any updates to your particular version of Word. Windows Update won't do that for you - you have to visit Microsoft Office's website for this to happen.
