How do I attach a file to email?

How do I attach a file to my email message?

  • when i click on "attach", all I get is the option to "open" or "cancel" to edit the file I want to attach. When I send it, the receiver cannot open the attachment, as it's just words, not an icon or link.

  • Answer:

Every e-mail program is different. The only ones where you can control exactly what goes in (and which make you do all the work) are the UNIX mail and sendmail commands. To use them, you have to know about headers, MIME types, and base64 encoding. Outlook Express has a menu item of Insert, which lets you choose File Attachment ... (You can also attach a Picture, which assumes you don't know that an image file is also a file attachment!) There should be help or online help for your particular program. You can either double-click the file or click it then click the Attach button to attach the file. You don't open or edit the file. To attach more than one file from the same directory ("folder"), press Ctrl while clicking, or click the first, press Shift, then click the last. The best e-mail program I've ever seen is Mozilla Thunderbird.
