Can't download files from email attachments..help?

I have windows xp..the problem is below but the question I will put first Most important question-is there anyway to see the attachments..will a different program work..It does this regardless of if from documnents, hotmail or yahoo. please tell me in easy to understand terms how to view attachments..if I download another program, do I still hit download file and run or do I need to do something special. currently- A.sometimes wordperfect works & I can see attachment or B. I hit download file & get run & save & I hit run..an hourglass comes up & then it goes to just an arrow & nothing ever opens or C. I hit download file & run & I get a message that says "conversion in process"..nothing happens...sometimes it says program is not responding & other times, the message just stays there, but the file rarely opens. I have tried saving it & opening it via wordpad & still nothing. What is wrong..what can I do (I think I'm on the 44th day of a 60 day trial period w/wordperfect.

It depends what files you want to download, and what software you have installed on your computer. If you want to download a word document (???.doc), then you need a program that can open that file. Microsoft Word will obvious do the trick, but allso Openoffice will work. The three last letters in the filename gives it's type. .doc = Word .pdf = Adobe Reader .xls = EXCEL (Spreadsheet) and so on.... When you download attachments you have two choices.... 1. Open 2. Save Open = Open document, without saving the document on your computer. Save = Save the file on your computer. Then you can open it whenever you like. Solutions If you download Openoffice, you'll be able to open all office documents. Presentations, spreadsheets, textdocuments. The best part, this is a really good program, and it's completely free. PDF files, you can download adobe reader, then you'll be able to open these documents as well. ---- I hope this does the trick for you.
