What is the advisable format in submitting/attaching a resume online?

I'm applying for a job online and some job sites require me to attach my resume. I've been using microsoft excel because for me, it's easier to use, but is it ok to submit or attach a resume in an excel format?..what is the advisable format in attaching a resume?

.docx,.doc or .pdf I usually go with .docx or .pdf, sometimes I attach both!
